Pure Communication

October 27, 2009 at 7:22 pm (Uncategorized)

It’s funny how people hear things… especially how little kids hear things. I told my baby doll that I was going to give her an ultimatum and she asked, “Why are you gonna give me an old tomato?” My hubby and I cracked up. She was clearly disgusted and didn’t know why I would say something like that, so I exaggerated my pronunciation of the word and defined it for her. After all that, I gave her the ultimatum.

When I was younger, I had a friend who made fun of the way I pronounced things. Being raised up and down the east coast with a brief stint in a foreign country, I guess I picked up a strange accent. Young children raised like I was raised learn to “warsh” their clothes in Kentucky and “paaak the caaaa” in Massachusetts. They also pick up the body language and conversation cues that vary from region to region, and without some logical way to keep it separate, jumble together what they have learned, not realizing that they will never successfully communicate to anybody, all the while understanding the communication styles of everybody they meet.

At the suggestion of my boss, I took on a corporate mentor because I am aware of the fact that I don’t communicate well in person. My mentor, who does not have a history of cultural immersion does not believe that I can possibly understand the diverse nature of communication with the people who I encounter on a daily basis and proceeds to reprimand me for thinking that I could possibly understand their communicative style. (Did I mention that, ever since being teased for my differences in school, I became fascinated with communication and studied it in college to better understand what was going on. I even took that to another level after college, when I began speaking to groups of people and took vocal lessons to help me soften my accent and improve my projection.) To make a long story short… I am done trying to communicate vocally with the outside world. I can understand all I want, but that doesn’t make my skill at translating my speech and body language to each and every person’s understanding, so I will just write.

A good sign that your 5th Chakra is out of balance…

October 21, 2009 at 7:47 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , )

You know your 5th Chakra is out of balance when…

- you get to work and find yourself cussing like a sailor to someone you hardly know (and you don’t normally cuss or talk to this person)

- you can’t get enough greasy, salty french fries.

- you get a wicked sore throat and a lingering cough.

- you can’t tell your boss that you need a pay-raise for all the extra work you have taken on over the last year.

- you suspect your pillow is possessed by gremlins and is choking you to near death in the night.

Not feeling the need for urgency today

October 14, 2009 at 12:21 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , )

Nothing says slow down or stop like having too much to do. I don’t mean ignore everything you have on your plate, but always having to move at warp speed to complete the constantly generated tasks on your “to do” list should be a giant red flag that you are doing something wrong. People may laugh when I say it, but that is the time to stop, take a few deep breaths, and sit down with a pen and paper to make your “need to do” list.

Once you have poured out everything on your mind, you can evaluate what is really important and needs to be done by you, what can be given to someone else to do, and which committees do you need to drop because you simply don’t have the time to give (and there is nothing wrong with that, when you have time later on down the line, you can give it then, but you can’t give what you don’t have.)

This is a common trap with moms and women who are trying to climb the corporate ladder at work. I know because I am one and I used to be the latter. (Haha! That was a little unintended play on words.)

Well that is my piece for now. Lunch break is almost over and I need a moment of peace in the falling rain.

Packaging a really great product

September 23, 2009 at 9:05 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

Well, it’s avocado season here in SoCal. Carpinteria is gearing up for its big annual avocado festival and the fruit is ripe on the trees. Unfortunately, my hubby is allergic to avocados, so I don’t cook with them as often as I would like, but I couldn’t pass this up! I spent my lunch break wandering the shelves at Trader Joes and for a small investment of around three bucks, I got myself a delicious flavor explosion! Check it out:

Heart-shaped breakfast

September 22, 2009 at 8:27 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , )

I reviewed my “Latte Factor” and realized that I can really save a lot of cash by eating breakfast at work when I am unable to do it before I leave the house (instead of getting something from Starbucks to eat during my commute.)

I pack a serving of yogurt, a scoop of granola with dried fruit,  a bowl and a spoon. When I get to work, I mix and enjoy. What a delight!

Today, I grabbed a bowl that my baby doll has had since she was a tiny baby (little plastic bowls are easy to transport to and from work) and it was heart-shaped. It made me smile, so I thought I would share it.

What a wonderful world it would be if everyone ate their morning meal from a heart-shaped bowl!

Bountiful Harvest

Garden-fresh tomatoes and rosemary

Garden-fresh tomatoes and rosemary

I am fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places in Southern California. Our home is minutes from the beach in a city that is one of SoCal’s best kept secrets. I work in another city right on the coast – okay, I’ll give you a hint – it’s known as the American Riviera. I see dolphins on my morning walks on the beach and have year-round access to market-fresh, local fruits and veggies.

The landscaping where I work is loaded with rosemary bushes that the landscapers buzz-cut once a month and throw in the trash. I saw the weed-whacker out today and thought about my commitment to honor seasonal celebrations (which is very important in a place that is 70 and sunny year-round.) I decided to harvest some of this rosemary myself, so I grabbed my office scissors and a few paper towels, offered my thanks to the forces of nature that made my harvest possible, and took a few sprigs from the bushes. The clippings are enjoying a drink of fresh water in a cup in my office to purge any pesticides.

Enjoying the fragrance and continuing with my work, a co-worker of mine stopped by and asked if I like tomatoes. I said, “yes,” and he handed me a bag of tomatoes fresh from his garden. I am so thrilled to begin my favorite season of the year this way!

My life is measured eight weeks at a time

August 16, 2009 at 8:27 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , )

On Friday night, it hit me that we have entered the infamous “Week 6″ of my hubby’s school session. Week’s 6 and 7 are crazy. During this time, if I want things to run smoothly, I have to take up a lot of the slack with the housework (laundry, dishes, meal prep, childcare.) This is the way it is or everything falls into utter chaos (which we have let happen numerous times in the past.)

At first, I got frustrated, then I panicked, then I realized that this is no different than an elementary school teacher measure his or her life month-by-month, or a farmer measuring life by the seasons, or an accountant measure life by the week. Eight week sessions are actually a pretty leisurely way to measure things out.

Then, I came up with a plan… and things in our life are running relatively smoothly (of course, it is only Monday.) My baby doll and I had a great weekend. She spent most of Saturday with a friend while I ran errands. After that, she helped me clean and gas-up both cars, and we even had time to go pick up a new Barbie doll at Toys R Us (my baby doll was such a good sport, she deserved the reward.)

And now, my work week begins again…

Goodbye dear kitty

August 15, 2009 at 12:38 pm (Uncategorized) (, )

Today we said goodbye to a cute little kitty who belonged to a friend of mine. Sammie will be in our hearts always. (And I will always remember the time I checked on her while my friend was away on vacation and I caught the little party animal blasting mariachi music with a guilty expression on her face that told me that I just busted up a little house party!)

I stopped writing

August 13, 2009 at 8:21 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

I stopped writing because I thought something big was going to happen and it was going to change my life. In my head all these overwhelming changes were about to happen, and then — they didn’t happen. And, wow, I feel a little bit more enlightened for it.

I came across two lovely quotes that identified exactly what was happening to me. Here the are:

I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened. — Mark Twain

How much pain they have cost us, the evils which have never happened. — Thomas Jefferson

In the end, none of it came to pass, and I find myself at the same point that I was at before I stopped writing. Oh, okay, that’s right, I feel slightly more enlightened for it.

Cheers!

No such thing as permanence

July 16, 2009 at 8:32 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , )

I checked out Enna’s blog (which I absolutely LOVE and if she ever turns her life into a sitcom, I hope there will be a place for me in producing it!) today and read a post where her friend called Macy’s “Marshall Fields” and I didn’t know what that meant until I was driving home this afternoon, listening to NPR, when they announced that the name of the Sears Tower is changed to Willis Tower as of today. This is a big deal to people, and Chicago natives in particular, as they do not like name changes (one that was mentioned was the Marshall Fields-Macy’s change.) They interviewed a bunch of people in Chicago who said that the Willis Tower will always be the Sears Tower to them, just as Macy’s will always be Marshall Fields”, and then NPR played “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” by Will Smith. I thought, “Hm… if this guy, Will Smith, can reinvent himself from a hip hop artist with a dopey sitcom to a serious actor, why can’t the Sears Tower be the Willis Tower?”

Just because something was once something, does that mean it can never be anything but what it was? I used to be a vegetarian, but people wouldn’t call me that today as I eat meat pretty regularly. I used to be pregnant, but I am not any more.  My last name isn’t the same as it was when I was growing up, neither is my middle name, and, come to think of it, I don’t even use the first name I was given by birth much anymore. Is a raisin still a grape? Is a butterfly still a caterpillar? Alright. I admit that I  can see some flaws in my argument, but the company with the largest share of the building typically gets to put it’s name on the outside.

Phwew! I am beat! Goodnight!
